Super crunchy triple chocolate granola. When your chocolate craving hits, satisfy it with this wholesome breakfast or snack!

I interrupt the recent holiday cookie binge Iโve been putting you through (sorry?) to bring you something a tad healthier than confetti cake batter cookies, salted caramel pecan chocolate chip cookies, and white chocolate chip cranberry cookies.
Perhaps not as clean as a bowl of bran flakes or as green as a plate of lettuce, but letโs be real. We both know you wouldnโt be reading if that is the kind of stuff you found around these parts.
When it comes to healthier recipes, sometimes you just have to bring out the big guns: chocolate. Granola, while boring to some, is actually one of my favorite things to munch on. So many textures, so much crunch, the flavor possibilities are endless, dried fruit, nuts, the whole shebang. Eaten for breakfast, as a snack, pre-workout, post-workout, midnight munchie, or sitting at my deskโIย never tire of this stuff!
The only downside to granola? It is so darn addicting.ย But I can think of worse problems!

I like to make my own granola. Not only is it SO easy to throw together, but it is incredibly cheaper (andย healthier!)ย than buying it at the store. I do not ย understand how a 3 cup bag of granola (aka sugar)ย can market for over $7 when it costs pennies to make the same amount, in a healthier way, at home?! Silly business if you ask me.
And you know what? Take one look at all of myย wholesome homemade granola recipes like pumpkin granola, maple almond granola, and granola clusters, and I assure you that I can convert you into a granola-making-fiend just like me. Youโll thank me later.

The ingredient list for my latest granola recipe is quite short. Nothing crazy, nothing you canโt pronounceโฆ just simple, wholesome ingredients. And, of course, that includes the appearance of chocolate three times. Yep. A triple threat of the good stuff.
Starting with melted coconut oil, add your unsweetened cocoa powder, andย a touch of brown sugar. This can all be mixed by hand in a small bowl. Stir in some honey (or agave or maple syrup)ย to make it all stick together; donโt skimp on this binding agent. These four ingredients combinedโthe coconut oil, cocoa powder, brown sugar, and honeyโwill make aย liquidy paste to drench over your oats and create crunchy chocolate clusters as the oats bake.

For the add-ins, I didnโt get too crazy here. A simple mix of chocolate chips and chocolate coveredย raisinsย is added toย the granola after it bakes, to avoid burning any chocolate. While the granola is still warm,ย add inย the chocolate chips and give them a nice stir. Theย warm granola will melt the chocolate chips creating large sticky chocolate clusters. The best part. I mixed in the chocolate covered raisins after the granola cooled, so they held their shapeโfeel free to add them in when the granola is warm though.
For theย chocolate coveredย raisins, I used Dark Chocolate Raisinets. My favorite candy ever, ย I kid you not. Disclaimer: I am mildly obsessed with raisins in any form, I donโt care how old or boring that makes me seem!
If you prefer, feel free toย replace the dark chocolate raisins withย other add-ins: nuts, dried cranberries, pumpkin seeds, white chocolate chips, toasted coconut, etc. Keep in mind that chocolate must be present three times since you knowโฆ this IS triple chocolate granola. ๐
Just kiddingโฆ sorta.

The chewy dark chocolate raisins provided the perfect texture contrast to the crunchy clustersโI love a good texture profile when I can find one.
Super-crunch-style, even after a few days. This granola lasted about 1 week and was plenty crunchyโeven MORE crunchy by day 5 and 6. And, when sitting in a breakfast bowl of milk, the granola clusters STILL remained crunchy.
From the cocoa powder and the melty chocolate chips, youโll find no remanence of coconut taste dancing around your tastebuds. I strongly suggest you use coconut oil here (and in any granola recipe calling for oil), but if you cannot get your hands on any, canola oil will work just fine.

Quick, straightforward, and easy. Not to mentionโฆ cheaper than anything youโll find in the store AND made without any preservatives or weird gunk you canโt pronounce.
Customize it how you prefer with different add-ins or any suggestions I provide below. Just donโt skimp on the triple chocolate ordealโI mean, when else is it OK to have chocolate for breakfast?! And for a snack? And pre-workout fuel? Post-workout recovery? Midnight munchie? Yep, you just found your new favorite healthy treat.
PLUS, how fun would this be to give away to friends this holiday season? I nice healthy, yet incredible decadent tasting munchie that would be beautifully wrapped up in a mason jar or Christmas tin. Your friends may thank you for saving their diets. Just sayinโ. ๐

And if you love a little peanut butter with your chocolate, youโll appreciate my recipe for chocolate peanut butter granola, too! Or try plain peanut butter granola.

Also made this and it was another hit! Would it possible to reduce the amount of sweetness (e.g. sugar/syrup) without compromising on texture? Thank you!
Hi Rachael! Sugar is used for moisture and texture in baked goods as well as taste. You can certainly try reducing the sugar, but the resulting texture will be different than intended.
Hi Sally,
If i wanted to add nuts to this recipe, can I bake them along with the oat mixuture so they are toasted, or would you recommend toasting them seperately and adding them later on?
Thank you in advance for your reply!
Hi Andrea! We would toast them separately and stir them in at the end, when the recipe says to add any add-ins you wish in step 3. Enjoy!
WOW, is this good. Iโve made your Vanilla Almond and Pumpkin Spice granolas โboth deliciousโ but this is definitely my favorite so far. The crunchy clusters combined with the soft & chewy raisinets is terrific!
Hi,
Is the brown sugar necessary if we already are adding honey?
P.s. I love your recipes!! Your PB cookies are a hit!
Hi Molly, you can skip the brown sugar but the granola wonโt be as sweet. I definitely do not recommend skipping the honey though. You may want to increase the amount to 1/2 cup. Cocoa powder is pretty bitter.
Fantastic recipe! I made it last night and found myself munching on it as a midnight snackโฆ yum! I didnโt have coconut oil so just used olive oil. I added about 1/4 cup of shredded coconut to the mix. And I baked about 15-20 minutes, as I find the bake times on Sallyโs recipes can be a little off from what I need/preferโฆ I have another go-to granola recipe and 15 min is perfectโฆ so I didnโt want to overdo this one. Fun, quick, easy, and delish. Could be a fun one to make and give as a fun foodie gift!
I followed the instructions, but mine somehow tastes burned. I used the exact quantities and an half sheet baking pan with parchment paper. Anyone experience this? Should I try a lower temp or time? I so want to succeed with this. Thanks for any help!
Hi Katie! Your oven may run a little hot, we always recommend using an in-oven thermometer, or you can try turning your oven down. And always keep an eye on things while they bake!
So delicious and crunchy, just the right amount of saltiness! Thank you for the amazing recipe!
I am not a fan of raisins. What would be a good sub? Maybe cranberry??
Definitely!
This is seriously the best chocolate granola Iโve ever eaten โ and this is coming from a chocolate lover and avid granola eater. Itโs crunchy and has that delicious chocolate taste โ mmm.
I made one change to the recipe; instead of using all honey for the 1/3 cup of liquid sweetener, I used about half honey and half maple syrup, with about 3/4 tsp vanilla as well. In my opinion, chocolate isnโt real chocolate without a splash of vanilla!
Also, 1/2 cup of chocolate chips isnโt needed. I only used about 1/4 cup, but my family actually complained that it was โtoo rich and too chocolate-yโ. (I must disagree, but omitting the chocolate took the popular vote.) Itโs perfectly fine without it.
I recommend turning the oven to convection bake and checking it after 10 minutes, 10 minutes, 5 minutes, 5 minutes. It may not appear crunchy enough at the end but it crisps up excellently.
All in all, I love this granola and absolutely recommend it!
I added shredded coconut and only baked for 20 minutes. My granola turned out great.
